According to "Chinese New Migrants in Suriname: The Inevitability of Ethnic Performing" by Paul Tjon Sie Fat, most of the workers are migrants from Liaoning and Jilin Provinces. The photographer's personal observation confirms their Chinese national status versus being ethnic Chinese-Surinamese. It was discovered by Suriname tax authorities in 2002 that that SJS had evaded paying US$3 million in export duties.
