Xie Shao from near Leshan, Sichuan Province, China, a construction worker who has lived in Suriname for six years. He borrowed money from others in his family so that he could make the journey to Suriname from Sichuan, via the Netherlands. He paid off his debt in one year. He found life in Suriname difficult because the pay initially was low and he did not know the language, Sranan Tango. He earns a higher wage now and is able to save money back to his family in China. Life is easier in Suriname because he lived on a farm in an impoverished village. He has no immediate plans to return to China permanently.
