Karen refugee transports cut bamboo at the massive, sprawling Mae La refugee camp near the Thai-Burma border, Thailand. Now 50,000 refugees from Burma (Myanmar), mostly Karen, live in this refugee camp. In 1996, roughly 12,000 refugees inhabited the site. For over 50 years the Karen minority has been fighting a low level insurgency in the jungles of eastern Myanmar (Burma) for independence from the Burmese military junta.
