The All-American Canal cuts straight through the Imperial Sand Dunes on its way from the Colorado River to water the farms that lie in what used to be a below sea level desert around El Centro, California, USA. The All-American Canal, which went into operation in 1944, provides potable water for 9 cities and irrigates over 530,000 acres (2,000 km²) of agricutlural land. It is the largest irrigation canal in the world, carrying up to 26,155 cubic feet per second of water. Seepage from this canal, which feeds the water table to Mexicali, adjacent and south of the border, will be decreased if the US carries through with construction of a more efficient canal.
