Homeless on streets / Streets like a nursing home: Destitute senior walks the street in San'ya on a rainy winter night empty but for the occasional old man returning to a cheap "do-ya" boarding house. Tokyo, Japan. Do-ya have become de facto dumping grounds for unwanted old men. In the northeast of Tokyo is a community that used to be called San'ya, where the unwanted lower Japanese castes of butchers and leather tanners had to live. Now it is known for low cost boarding houses. Though San'ya is thought of as a refuge for alcoholics, peel back a thin veneer and it immediately becomes evident what San'ya really is, a repository for unwanted, unloved old men. Many do-ya are little more than unregistered nursing homes, minus the medical staff. It keeps those, who can afford the Y1,000 - Y2,000/night off the streets at night.
