A migratory bird is swallowed up by the vastness of the saline Salton Sea, which sits below sea level in a desert basin near the US / Mexican border. In 1901, heavy springtime runoff from a canal, fed by the Colorado River, breached its banks and created a lake 35 miles (52.5 km) long and 15 miles wide (22.5 km) wide, Imperial County, California, USA.
