Elephant's ear, Kandy, Sri Lanka. Mahouts are extremely superstitious when it comes to physical attributes of their elephants. Ideally, the ear is almost triangular and somewhat rounded like a banyan leaf with a freckled pattern running along the edge. Elephants do not sweat. They cool themselves by perpetually fanning themselves with their ears. Most mahouts believe that an elephant which does not move its ears energetically is considered unlucky. No prince or king would own such an elephant. .
