Two images of the same hanging clothes drying rack. On the left, clothes hang six weeks after the government-enforced evacuation due to fears about radioactivity. On the right, the laundry hangs in tatters 6 months after the nuclear disaster at Fukushima Dai Ichi Power Plant. Near Odaka, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Due to concerns about radioactivity released by the Fukushima Dai Ichi Nuclear Power Plant, the Japanese government recently conceded that there will be some families who will not be able to return to their homes for over a decade. As of midnight 21 April 2011, the Japanese government declared the no-entry zone off-limits under the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Law which gives the police the power to detain anyone entering the zone for up to 30 days and impose a fine of up 100,000 JPY (US$1,200).
